Jennifer Thibodeau

MSW, RSW, CSAT-S, Clinical Social Worker, Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist, EMDR Therapist, Certified Clinical Partner Specialist

Co-Director of LifeSTAR Alberta

APSATS

Jennifer is a licensed clinical social worker, registered in the province of Alberta, a Certified Sex Addiction Therapist (CSAT), and a Clinical Partner Specialist (C). Jennifer is also a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist.

Emotionally Focused therapy is specifically used with couples.

“Today EFT is revolutionizing couple therapy. Rigorous studies during the past fifteen years have shown that 70 to 75 percent of couples who go through EFT recover from distress and are happy in their relationships. The results appear lasting, even with couples who are at high risk for divorce. EFT has been recognized by the American Psychological Association as an empirically proven form of couple therapy.” Sue Johnson 2008

In addition to her work at LifeStar Alberta where she serves both those who are struggling with compulsive sexual behaviours and partners, Jennifer has maintained a thriving private practice for over 20 years. She has worked with clients on a variety of issues such as depression, anxiety, marital relationships, parenting skills, grief, loss, life transitions, abuse, trauma, pornography addiction and sexual compulsivity along with many other issues. One of the therapeutic interventions that Jennifer is very experienced in is EMDR, which is a therapeutic intervention used for traumatic events. Jennifer has been using EMDR in her practice since 1998 and has done well over 1,000 EMDR sessions.

Jennifer is a Co-Director of LifeStar Alberta along with her husband Dr. Steven Thibodeau. Jennifer has a non-judgmental, supportive and caring approach. She enjoys her work immensely. Jennifer has been married to Steven for over 30 years and they have two wonderful adult children.

Are you tired of just existing and ready to start living? Change is possible.

I am a Canadian Certified Counsellor with master’s degrees in both psychology and counselling, and education. My areas of passion, research and expertise are

  • Trauma
  • Anxiety
  • Depression
  • Addiction

My practice is grounded in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and selectively incorporates several other systems, including Emotion Focused Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy and Strengths Based Therapy. I am also a certified personal fitness trainer and a ‘retired’ high school teacher and administrator. I am the co-author of two books – Awakening the Workplace, and Sink or Swim: Stress Management Strategies to Ensure Your Survival. I run both group and individual counselling sessions.

I am passionate about health and wellness. As a two-time cancer survivor, I firmly believe that wellness is more than just an absence of illness, and that a healthy lifestyle involves more than taking care of our physical needs, but our emotional needs as well.

I have deep respect and compassion for all individuals, and consider it an honor to walk on the difficult and rewarding journey of healing with my clients. My personal philosophy is based on being a therapist who is willing to accept individuals where they are at, and who they are, without bias or judgment in helping them to attain their true potential. I believe that in the quiet moments of contemplation the answers will come, with the help of a therapist who is guided by a strong theoretical background, continued learning from evidence-based studies and an open heart and mind to the discovery of the human condition.

My absolute favorite things to do are playing with my grandbabies, spending time with my family, working out, and gaining new knowledge.

Jacqueline Thibodeau, MSW, RSW, Certified Clinical Partner Specialist

I began my career as a counsellor working with Alberta Health Services focusing on tobacco addiction prevention as well as addiction recovery for youth. I then worked in an outpatient clinic for sex addiction and trauma recovery. It was in this position that the passion to understand and treat betrayal trauma first began.

I made the move to Toronto to complete my Master’s degree in social work and upon graduating I received the gold medal award for my research regarding partners of sexually addicted individuals. I have since worked in various mental health environments- including outpatient treatment centres, community agencies, walk-in counselling services, post-secondary communities and private practice.

I believe in working collaboratively and compassionately with the people that come to see me. I understand my job to be creating a therapeutic space where you feel comfortable, emotionally safe, and respected. Knowing that each person’s experience is unique, I work from a range of therapeutic modalities. Through our work together we will identify resources, skills, and patterns in your life that are effective as well as areas where you may want to transform.
